Rooted: Grounding our Lives in Christ and Community

Pastor Mike Zdorow delivering a Sunday message to church listeners at The Gathering Place church in Palm Beach Gardens

Let me ask you something — not to put you on the spot, but because I’ve been asking myself the same thing lately: What are you rooted in?

Not what you believe on paper. Not what you say when someone asks you about your faith. I mean really rooted in — like, “this is what holds me up when life gets messy, loud, and fast.”

Because let’s be honest… life is messy, loud, and fast. We barely finish summer and suddenly we’re knee-deep in schedules, deadlines, school supplies, and trying to keep up with it all. And even when we’re doing good things—helping others, working hard, showing up—it’s still possible to feel spiritually dry. Unanchored. Like we’re just… drifting.

That’s why this message hit me so deeply.

We kicked off a new series at church called Rooted, and it’s exactly what my soul needed. The idea is simple, but powerful: before we run into fall at full speed, before we tackle big plans or serve in big ways, we’ve got to slow down and ask:

“Am I rooted in Christ… or just going through the motions?”

I don’t know where you are in your faith journey. Maybe you’ve followed Jesus for years. Maybe you’re just curious, skeptical, or hurting. But wherever you are, I want you to know something: Jesus is not a supplement to your already busy life. He’s the source. The root. The thing that actually nourishes and sustains you when the wind picks up and the storms roll in.

Scripture puts it this way:

“Just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith…and overflowing with thankfulness.”
Colossians 2:6–7

I love that. Rooted and built up. Strong at the core and growing toward the light.

But here’s the catch — roots don’t grow in chaos. They grow in stillness, in depth, in rhythm. And maybe that’s the invitation for us this season: to unplug, slow down, and let our souls reset. Not by trying harder or doing more, but by abiding. Listening. Making space for God again.

Because if I’m honest, I’ve had seasons where my spiritual life felt more like a checklist than a connection. I knew the right things, but I wasn’t living in them. And I’ve had to come back to that truth: Jesus doesn’t shame shallow roots. He simply invites us to go deeper.

And I want that for you too.

I want you to know that you’re already complete in Christ. Not when you get it together. Not when you’re more spiritual, more accomplished, or more “put-together.” Right now. As you are. Not because of what you’ve done, but because of what He’s done for you.

So maybe you needed this reminder too:

  • You don’t have to hustle for your worth.
  • You don’t have to curate your life to be accepted.
  • You don’t have to stay stuck in the swirl of competing voices.

You are complete in Christ.

And when you’re rooted in that—really rooted—you grow from a place of wholeness, not for it. You serve from security, not scarcity. You weather storms with grace. And you bear fruit that feeds others.

So here’s my challenge (to both of us):
This week, let’s do one thing that helps us re-root. Spend a few quiet moments reading Colossians 2. Ask the Holy Spirit to show you what you’ve been rooted in—and what needs to shift. And then? Reach out to someone who needs that same encouragement. Maybe they’re praying for a sign. Maybe you’re it.

Let’s be the kind of people—and the kind of church—that’s not just busy, but deeply rooted in Jesus. And let’s grow from there.
