Peace Be With You: Finding Courage to Share Our Faith

delivers a message at The Gathering Place Church in Palm Beach Gardens

Behind Locked Doors

Have you ever felt so afraid that your world grows smaller? We cling to the familiar, avoid uncomfortable conversations, and hide behind locked doors—literally and figuratively. That was the scene on that first Easter evening. The disciples, terrified of arrest and unsure of what came next, had barricaded themselves in a room.

Peace in the Midst of Fear

When Jesus stood among them, he didn’t erase Good Friday or pretend their wounds didn’t matter. He showed them his hands and side—wounds that remain but now signify life, not death. Christian peace doesn’t remove hardship; it rests in the presence of the risen Christ amid our fears.

“Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” (John 20:21–22)

Sent with Peace

Jesus said, “As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” Notice the order: peace first, then mission. Anxiety can tempt us to hide behind locked doors of our own making, but resurrection changes what’s possible. The same Spirit that raised Jesus empowers us to go, to listen, to love, and to speak the hope we carry.

The Breath of the Spirit

When Jesus breathed on the disciples, he gave them the Holy Spirit. This is an image of new creation—life breathed where there was death. We cannot manufacture the courage to cross boundaries, forgive deeply, or persevere in love. We need his Spirit to breathe new life into our fear and cynicism.

Bearing Forgiveness

Jesus sent forgiven people to forgive others. He showed them his wounded hands and spoke of mercy. In our homes and communities, we are called to apologize, to forgive, and to repair what we can. These acts of grace bear witness to the power of the cross and the hope of the resurrection.

Gathered and Sent

We gather—at the Table, in prayer, around Scripture—to be formed in Jesus and to know one another. But worship doesn’t end in this room. We are sent into homes, schools, workplaces, and neighborhoods. Someone in your life may be more open than you imagine. They may need a listening ear, a prayer, or simply an honest conversation about your hope in Christ.

A Prayer for Courage

Jesus, breathe on us again. Meet us in the places where fear has made our world smaller. Give us your peace that we may not hide, your Spirit that we may not fret, and your love that we may step through the doors you open. The tomb is empty, Jesus is alive, and you are still sending your church. Amen.
