Summer of Wellness: Be True to Yourself

What if becoming your true self wasn’t about achieving something… but remembering something?

That’s the question we explored this week at The Gathering Place as part of our Summer of Wellness series. Using the movie Aladdin as our backdrop, we dug into a timeless struggle: the temptation to pretend, to perform, to become someone else just to feel accepted.

In the movie, Aladdin believes he has to become a prince to win Princess Jasmine’s heart. He puts on a parade, changes his clothes, reinvents his story—only to discover that what she wanted all along was the real him.

Sound familiar?

Who Are You, Really?

We’ve all worn masks. We’ve all walked into rooms and wondered if we’d be accepted for who we really are. Many of us have learned to fake it till we make it—but underneath, we long for authenticity, not performance.

The good news? God already knows the real you. And He’s not asking for a costume change.

When Jesus was baptized, before He preached a single sermon or performed a single miracle, He heard the voice of God say:

“You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.” (Mark 1:11)

That identity wasn’t earned. It was declared.

And it’s the same identity offered to us in Christ: You are my child. I love you. With you, I am well pleased.

The Wilderness is Where Identity is Tested

Immediately after Jesus’s baptism, He was sent into the wilderness. Why? Because identity isn’t just declared—it’s refined and tested. In the wilderness, Jesus faced temptation, doubt, and hunger. But He didn’t prove Himself. He remembered who He was.

We all have our own wilderness seasons. Maybe it’s grief, uncertainty, unemployment, burnout, or simply feeling lost. Maybe you’re in one now.

But hear this: even in the wilderness, you are not alone.
God sends angels. God speaks. God walks with you.

Becoming Whole in Every Circle

Our speaker, Randy Hunter, shared that for years, he lived as a different version of himself in every area of life—church, work, scouts, hobbies. Each “circle” came with its own expectations, its own version of Randy.

Eventually, he realized something: “It’s a lot easier to be one me than five or six.”

That’s the invitation for all of us—to live with integrity, to stop dividing ourselves into parts, and to let God heal the whole.

From Identity to Calling

When Jesus emerged from the wilderness, He didn’t just return to normal life. He stepped into His calling. That’s the rhythm of the Christian life:
Identity → Testing → Purpose.

Maybe your purpose is still forming. Maybe you’re still in the wilderness. Maybe you’re just beginning to hear God whisper: “You are mine.”

You don’t have to strive or pretend.
You are God’s masterpiece (Ephesians 2:10).
You are a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17).
And yes, sometimes we still carry bags full of old identities and hurts. But even that baggage can be surrendered.

Hear It Again

So let me say it once more. Let God say it again:

You are my child. I love you. With you, I am well pleased.

No matter where you are on your journey—whether you’re wandering, weary, or just wondering—this truth remains:
You are enough.
You are loved.
And you’re invited to live as your true self, in freedom and joy.
