When Faith Feels Fragile: Why Doubt Might Be a Starting Point

Pastor Mike Zdorow delivers a message to an engaged audience at The Gathering Place Church in Palm Beach Gardens.

This week at The Gathering Place, a church in Palm Beach Gardens, Pastor Mike Zdorow shared a message about doubt, faith, and the surprising truth that they don’t cancel each other out. Drawing from Psalm 13 and the story of Thomas, he reminded us that real faith doesn’t mean never questioning—it means trusting even when we do.

Let me be honest with you.

This wasn’t your typical feel-good, mountaintop Easter message. This was the message for after Easter—when you’ve got resurrection hope in your head but real-world heaviness in your heart. When the celebration ends and life still feels uncertain, unstable, or just plain hard.

I wrote this sermon with people in mind who are barely holding on. Who believe in God, yes—but are also wondering where God is in the middle of all this chaos. If that’s you—or someone you love—I want you to know: doubt is not the enemy of faith. Sometimes, it’s the doorway to it.

David cried out in Psalm 13, “How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever?” That’s not polished. It’s raw. And it’s holy. Because God doesn’t require us to clean up our emotions before coming to Him—He just invites us to come.

And then there’s Thomas. Poor Thomas gets labeled “the doubter,” but you know what I see? I see a disciple who was honest. Who said what the others were probably thinking. And you know what Jesus did? He showed up. Not with shame, but with scars. Not with condemnation, but with compassion.

That tells me something important: Jesus doesn’t distance Himself from your doubts. He walks straight through the locked doors of your life and meets you there.

If you’re asking questions right now, you’re not failing. You’re actually in a really good place—because spiritual honesty is the soil where deep faith takes root.

At The Gathering Place, we believe church should be a place where you can wrestle. A place where you don’t have to pretend. Where you can belong before you believe.
