When the Storm Comes, What Are You Standing On?

delivers a message at The Gathering Place Church in Palm Beach Gardens

The Storm Reveals Our Foundation

When we gathered at Dinner Church—sharing Olive Garden breadsticks, sweet treats, worship, and conversation—I found myself asking a simple but crucial question: when challenges and trials come, what rises to the surface? What foundation are you and I relying on when the rain falls, the waters rise, and the winds begin to blow?

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.” Matthew 7:24

Jesus never promises that those who follow Him will escape storms. Both the wise builder and the foolish builder faced the same rain and wind. What differs is what lies beneath the surface. In calm seasons, it’s easy to overlook our foundation, but when life shakes us—through disappointment, uncertainty, fear, or conflict—we see where our true trust has been placed.

Building on the Rock

Hearing Jesus’ words isn’t enough; we must live by them. I build on the rock when I choose forgiveness instead of resentment, when I pray before panic takes hold, and when I lean into community rather than isolate myself. Each small, faithful choice deepens my roots in Christ.

When the storms come, I still feel the wind and know the fear of uncertainty. But I stand on something steady—God’s presence promised in every trial. Over time, those small acts of obedience become a foundation no storm can wash away.

A Question to Carry With You

Where are you standing today? If your season feels calm, use this time to strengthen your foundation through prayer, Scripture, worship, and fellowship. If you’re already in the storm, don’t pretend everything is fine—bring your fear and frustration to God, reach out to someone you trust, and allow our church family to stand with you.

Jesus doesn’t promise a storm-free life. He promises that a life rooted in Him will endure every test.

Prayer

God, help us recognize the foundations upon which we build our lives. When fear, frustration, or uncertainty rises within us, remind us of Your presence. Teach us not only to hear Your words but to live by them. Strengthen our faith, draw us closer to one another, and help us remain rooted in You through every season. Amen.
