Recognizing God in Everyday Moments
Most of our lives unfold not on a mountain top but at a familiar well—while getting ready for work, driving children to school, running errands or waiting in a doctor’s office. In Genesis 24, we step away from dramatic miracles and find a quiet scene: an aging father, a trusted servant, a long journey, an ordinary well and a young woman drawing water. In that simple moment, God’s faithfulness shines through.
When the Plan Changes
Abraham had grown old and needed to find a wife for Isaac. Rather than making the journey himself, he entrusted the task to his servant. Here we learn that faith sometimes means releasing our grip and trusting God to work through others. God redeems our past but always leads us toward His future. We honor our history without living there, because His promises keep moving us forward.
God Was Already There
At the well, the servant prayed for a sign: that the woman chosen for Isaac would offer him a drink and water his camels. Then, before he even finished praying in his heart, she appeared.
“Before I finished praying in my heart, Rebekah came out.”
Providence isn’t always a thunderclap; it’s the quiet faithfulness of God at work long before we sense His hand.
Looking Back to See God’s Hand
Often we understand God’s work only in hindsight. We connect the dots—an unexpected conversation, a closed door, an accidental friendship. In the moment we may feel confused, but later we look back and say, “I think God was already there.”
The Next Faithful Step
When Rebekah was asked, “Will you go with this man?” no one answered for her. She simply replied, “I will go.” She had never met Isaac, never seen the land—yet she trusted enough to move forward with the light she had. Throughout Scripture, faith doesn’t come with a full blueprint. It’s responding to the next step God places before us.
God Cares for the Individual Heart
After Rebekah arrived, Isaac took her as his wife, and Scripture tells us he loved her. In that home, Isaac found comfort after his mother’s death. God’s covenant was never just about nations or promises—it was about caring for a grieving son. He sees your loss, your weariness, your unanswered questions, and He meets you there.
God Was Leading All Along
Looking back, Abraham’s servant recognized God’s guiding hand throughout the journey—the assignment, the road, the prayer, Rebekah’s arrival and the return home. In our own lives, seasons of uncertainty may be preparation, silence may be foundation. We may not know every detail, but we know the One who does.
A Prayer for the Ordinary Day
Through Jesus, we see that the God who guided Abraham’s servant is the same God who sought us long before we sought Him. Tomorrow morning, before your day begins, pause and pray:
“Lord, help me recognize Your hand today.”
Then carry this question: “Where are You already at work, and how can I join You?”
You may not see the entire plan, but even in the most ordinary places, He is already there.
