Resting in the Shepherd’s Garden

Billy Annisdelivers a message at The Gathering Place Church in Palm Beach Gardens

A Little Walk in the Woods

I remember the day my daughter Ellie asked for a nature walk. We headed to a wooded area near our home, soaking in the breeze and marveling at God’s creation. As we explored, we even found the bones of a small bird, and we paused to pray over the tiny creature that had met a tragic end. It felt like a sacred moment of connection with our Creator.

But as I ventured deeper, I heard a sudden thud behind me. My heart sank when I turned to see Ellie on the ground, tears streaming down her face and a scrape on her arm. She looked at me with fear and said, “Daddy, I want to go home.” In that moment, I realized how easily life’s unexpected falls can scare us and leave us longing for the safety of home.

The Shepherd’s Gentle Guidance

We all experience that ache in our souls when we fall—sometimes physically, often spiritually. We cry out, “I want to go home,” not because we’re spoiled, but because life can overwhelm us. Yet our Shepherd meets us right where we are, ready to comfort and restore.

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters.
He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me.
Your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

In these words, we see the heart of our Shepherd: He prepares green meadows for our rest, still waters to soothe our thirst, and a table laden with blessings even amid trials. His presence transforms our fear into peace.

From the Wooded Path to the Empty Tomb

That very spirit guided our Gathering Place community on Easter morning when we entered our sanctuary transformed into the garden of the empty tomb. We remembered Mary Magdalene, weeping alone until she mistook the risen Christ for a gardener. When He called her name, her tears turned to joy. In the same way, He calls each of us out of our despair and invites us into new life.

Resting in His Presence

Whether you’re bruised by life’s falls or wearied by uncertainty, know that your Shepherd is attentive to every cry. He has set up a garden in your heart, ready to refresh you with grace and mercy. Today, rest in His presence. Let His rod and staff guide you, His green pastures restore you, and His overflowing cup remind you of His unfailing love.

Come as you are. Sit with Him. He meets you where you are and leads you home.
