Surely Goodness and Mercy Shall Follow Me

Mike Zdorowdelivers a message at The Gathering Place Church in Palm Beach Gardens

Grounded in the Shepherd’s Care

I invite you to rest in the truth that Jesus is your Shepherd. When life shakes you—when the ground beneath your feet feels unsteady—you need a firm foundation. Psalm 23 has long been that sure place for God’s people, a well we return to again and again. Even when we can’t see the path ahead, we can declare together that our Shepherd leads us beside quiet waters, restores our souls, and guides us in righteousness.

The Pursuit of Grace

Psalm 23 whispers a beautiful promise at its close. David writes,

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

That word “follow” in Hebrew is not a casual trailing behind—it means to pursue, to chase with intention and strength. Picture a mother bear racing to protect her cub. That is the image of God’s goodness and mercy rushing toward you, never letting go, never growing tired, always bent on your healing and hope.

From the Sea to the Sanctuary

Consider the life of John Newton, the writer of “Amazing Grace.” A reckless sailor entangled in the slave trade, Newton cried out for mercy when a fierce Atlantic storm threatened to take his life. He survived and later realized that God’s grace had been pursuing him long before that tempest—and long after it. Like Newton, you might have wandered far from what’s right. Yet God’s mercy never stopped chasing you, calling you back into covenant love.

“Surely” – An Anchor of Faith

David’s use of “surely” rings with unwavering confidence—not because of David’s perfection, but because of God’s unchanging character. Jesus echoes this when He commissions His disciples: “Surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Matthew 28:20). That same covenant faithfulness holds true for you today. You don’t have to manufacture confidence. You rest in the One who fulfills every promise.

Embracing God’s Goodness in Every Season

“All the days of my life” means the good days and the aching ones. When grief presses heavy. When regret stalks you. When anxiety and shame threaten to close in. Even then, God’s goodness and mercy are on your trail, determined to bless you, sustain you, and bring you home. This is not mere optimism. This is faith in a Shepherd who will never abandon His flock.

Your Invitation Today

Pause, breathe, and let this promise wash over you. No matter what season you face—green pastures or valleys of shadow—God’s goodness and mercy are in relentless pursuit. He delights to welcome you into His presence and never lets you go. May that truth shape your every breath and embolden your every step.
