Seeing the Unseen in Everyday Life
I’ll never forget the day I almost passed by my friend Victor in a giant bear costume on the Moscow metro. You know those moments when you’re so busy you don’t even see the person right in front of you? I had places to be, papers to pick up—just one more errand. And there he was, hidden inside layers of plush fur, handing out flyers no one wanted. When he called out, “Hello, Pastor,” I stopped in my tracks. Suddenly I realized that while everyone saw the costume, they never saw Victor—his story of sacrifice, struggle, and hope.
The Wilderness of Our Lives
It struck me then how often I walk past people without really seeing them. And it reminded me of a story in Genesis 21 that pulls back the curtain on our own wilderness seasons: those times when life doesn’t go as planned, grief pours in, disappointment feels endless, and we wonder if anyone—even God—sees us.
Hagar’s Desert Encounter
In Genesis 21, we meet Hagar and her son Ishmael—cast out into the desert with only a little food and water. As the supplies ran out, she placed her son under a bush, unable to watch him suffer. She walked away, certain her world had ended. But then Scripture says:
“God heard the boy crying, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven… ‘Lift the boy up and take him by the hand, for I will make him into a great nation.’”
At the very moment of her greatest heartbreak, God met Hagar in her wilderness. He opened her eyes to a well of water and renewed hope for her son’s future.
God’s Compassion Beyond Our Expectations
Notice that God’s promise through Isaac remains firm—yet God’s compassion extends far beyond that covenant line. He didn’t abandon Hagar or Ishmael; He saw them in the margins and honored their worth. That tells us something profound about His character: He sees every life, not only those we deem important.
Learning to See with Compassion
Jesus reminds us of the same truth when He says,
“Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” (Matthew 10:29–31)
If God notices when a small bird falls, how much more does He notice you—and every person whose story brushes past yours?
Living as God’s Visible Compassion
As followers of Jesus, we’re called to widen our vision. Comfort can narrow our hearts until we only care for those who look, sound, and act like us. But the heart of our Father is expansive—extending blessing, mercy, and justice to the overlooked, the hurting, the strangers we pass by. When we learn to see with His eyes, our lives become living testimonies of His compassion.
Walking with You Through the Wilderness
Maybe you’re in a season that feels like a desert—uncertainty, pain, loneliness. Hear this: God has not forgotten you. He sees your tears and He hears your cry. In that place of desperation, His presence can become more real than ever before. Let’s open our eyes together to the wells of His grace and commit ourselves to seeing others the way He sees them.
