This is Us: The Way of Jesus & Whole Life Discipleship

Last week I shared the simple truth: you belong here. This week, I want to take us a step further. Jesus doesn’t just invite us to belong—He invites us to become something.

I think of Jesus’ words in Matthew 7: “Enter through the narrow gate… small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.” Following Jesus isn’t always convenient. It’s more like walking a narrow mountain trail where every step matters. But when you reach the summit, the view is breathtaking. That’s the kind of life Jesus invites us into—harder, yes, but more beautiful and more real than anything else.

Jesus also said, “Everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.” Two homes may look the same on the outside—painted trim, manicured lawns, smiling families—but only one will stand when the storm hits. Jesus isn’t interested in us simply believing about Him. He calls us to build our entire lives on Him.

At The Gathering Place, that’s what we’re trying to do. We’re not an independent startup church—we stand in the Wesleyan tradition, shaped by John Wesley’s vision of grace that transforms every part of our lives. Salvation isn’t just about going to heaven one day. It’s about being delivered from sin now, restored to the image of God now, renewed in righteousness, holiness, justice, mercy, and truth—now.

Wesley described grace in three movements:

  • Prevenient grace: God’s love reaching out before we even realize it.
  • Justifying grace: Jesus forgiving us and making us right with God.
  • Sanctifying grace: The Spirit shaping us, room by room, closet by closet, into Christ’s likeness.

Grace isn’t meant to be a moment. It’s meant to be a movement.

That’s why sacraments are so important to us. In baptism, whether as infants, children, or adults, God declares, “You belong to Me.” It’s not just a ritual—it’s God’s covenant love that claims us before we even know how to respond. And in Holy Communion, which we celebrate every week, Jesus meets us again at His table. It’s our reminder that we are forgiven, that we belong, and that we’re called to live as His disciples.

So how does all this play out in everyday life? I believe discipleship touches four areas:

  1. Faith Life – Building a living relationship with Jesus through worship, Scripture, and prayer.
  2. Inner Life – Letting Jesus heal the parts of us no one else sees—our soul, emotions, and mental well-being.
  3. Community Life – Walking with one another as a spiritual family, carrying each other through the highs and lows.
  4. Palm Beach County Life – Making a real impact in our neighborhoods by serving, seeking justice, and showing mercy.

This is who we are. This is what it means to belong, but also to become.

So I’ll leave you with this question: What’s your next faithful step? Maybe it’s baptism—for you or for your child. Maybe it’s being more honest about your inner life. Maybe it’s moving out of isolation and into community. Or maybe it’s serving beyond the walls of the church.

Whatever it is, remember this: Jesus loves you. We love you. And we are in this together.
